Why are Jews so powerful and Muslims so powerless? by Dr. Farrukh Saleem January 8, 2010

(Folks, I don't usually quote whole-hog from somebody else's blog, but this one needs to be spread far and wide. The author is a Pakistani journalist with a wide following in the Muslim world, and he's telling it -- no holds barred -- like it is. Let's hope that nobody declares a Fatwa on him for this.)

There are only 14 million Jews in the world; seven million in the Americas, five million in Asia, two million in Europe and 100,000 in Africa. For every single Jew in the world there are 100 Muslims. Yet, Jews are more than a hundred times more powerful than all the Muslims put together. Ever wondered why?

Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish. Albert Einstein, the most influential scientist of all time and TIME magazine's 'Person of the Century', was a Jew. Sigmund Freud - ego, superego - the father of psychoanalysis was a Jew. So were Karl Marx, Paul Samuelson and Milton Friedman.

Here are a few other Jews whose intellectual output has enriched the whole of humanity: Benjamin Rubin gave humanity the vaccinating needle. Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine. Alert Sabin developed the improved live polio vaccine. Gertrude Elion gave us a leukemia-fighting drug. Baruch Blumberg developed the vaccination for Hepatitis B. Paul Ehrlich discovered a treatment for syphilis (a sexually transmitted disease). Elie Metchnikoff won a Nobel Prize in infectious diseases.

Bernard Katz won a Nobel Prize in neuromuscular transmission. Andrew Schally won a Nobel in endocrinology (disorders of the endocrine system; diabetes, hyperthyroidism). Aaron Beck founded Cognitive Therapy (psychotherapy to treat mental disorders, depression and phobias). Gregory Pincus developed the first oral contraceptive pill. George Wald won a Nobel for furthering our understanding of the human eye. Stanley Cohen won a Nobel in embryology (study of embryos and their development). Willem Kolff came up with the kidney dialysis machine.

Over the past 105 years, 14 million Jews have won 180 Nobel Prizes while only 3 Nobel Prizes have been won by 1.4 billion Muslims (other than Peace Prizes).

Why are Jews so powerful? Stanley Mezor invented the first micro-processing chip. Leo Szilard developed the first nuclear chain reactor; Peter Schultz, the optical fibre cable; Charles Adler - traffic lights; Benno Strauss - stainless steel; Isador Kisee - sound movies; Emile Berliner - the telephone microphone and Charles Ginsburg - the videotape recorder.

Famous financiers in the business world who belong to the Jewish faith include Ralph Lauren (Polo), Levis Strauss (Levi's Jeans), Howard Schultz (Starbuck's) , Sergey Brin (Google), Michael Dell (Dell Computers), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Donna Karan (DKNY), Irv Robbins (Baskins & Robbins) and Bill Rosenberg (Dunkin Donuts).

Richard Levin, President of Yale University, is a Jew. So are Henry Kissinger (American secretary of state), Alan Greenspan (Federal Chairman of Banking under Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush, Jr.), Joseph Lieberman, Senator, Madeleine Albright (former Secretary of State), Maxim Litvinov (USSR Foreign Minister), David Marshal (Singapore's first Chief Minister), Issac Isaacs (Governor-General of Australia), Benjamin Disraeli (British statesman and author), Yevgeny Primakov (Russian Prime Minister), Jorge Sampaio (President of Portugal), Herb Gray (Canadian Deputy Prime Minister), Pierre Mendes (French Prime Minister), Michael Howard (British Home Secretary), Bruno Kreisky (Chancellor of Austria) and Robert Rubin (former Secretary of the Treasury).

In the media, famous Jews include Wolf Blitzer (CNN), Barbara Walters (ABC News), Eugene Meyer (Washington Post), Henry Grunwald (Editor-in-Chief of Time Magazine), Katherine Graham (publisher of The Washington Post), Joseph Lelyyeld (Executive Editor, The New York Times), and Max Frankel (New York Times).

Can you name the most beneficent philanthropist in the history of the world? The name is George Soros, a Jew, who has so far donated a colossal $4 billion; most of which has gone as aid to scientists and universities around the world. Second to George Soros is Walter Annenberg, another Jew, who has built a hundred libraries by donating an estimated $2 billion.

At the Olympics, Mark Spitz set a record of sorts by wining seven gold medals. Lenny Krayzelburg is a three-time Olympic gold medalist. Spitz, Krayzelburg and Boris Becker (Tennis) are all Jewish.

Did you know that Harrison Ford, George Burns, Tony Curtis, Charles Bronson, Sandra Bullock, Barbra Streisand, Billy Crystal, Woody Allen, Paul Newman, Peter Sellers, Dustin Hoffman, Michael Douglas, Ben Kingsley, Kirk Douglas, William Shatner, Jerry Lewis and Peter Falk are all Jewish?

As a matter of fact, Hollywood itself was founded by a Jew. Among directors and producers, Steven Spielberg, Mel Brooks, Oliver Stone, Aaron Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210), Neil Simon (The Odd Couple), Andrew Vaina (Rambo's 1, 2 and 3), Michael Mann (Starsky and Hutch), Milos Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Douglas Fairbanks (The Thief of Baghdad) and Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) are all Jewish.

To be certain, Washington is the capital that matters and in Washington the lobby that matters is The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. Washington knows that if PM Ehud Olmert were to discover that the earth is flat, AIPAC will make the 109th Congress pass a resolution congratulating Olmert on his discovery.

William James Sidis, with an IQ of 250-300, is the brightest human who ever existed. Guess what faith did he belong to?

So, why are Jews so powerful?

Answer: Education!

Why are Muslims so powerless?

There are an estimated 1,476,233,470 Muslims on the face of the planet: one billion in Asia, 400 million in Africa, 44 million in Europe and six million in the Americas. Every fifth human being is a Muslim. For every single Hindu there are two Muslims, for every Buddhist there are two Muslims and for every Jew there are one hundred Muslims. Ever wondered why Muslims are so powerless?

Here is why: There are 57 member-countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), and all of them put together have around 500 universities; one university for every three million Muslims. The United States has 5,758 universities (1 for every 57,000 Americans) and India has 8,407. In 2004, Shanghai Jiao Tong University compiled an 'Academic Ranking of World Universities', and intriguingly, not one university from Muslim-majority states was in the top 500.

As per data collected by the UNDP, literacy in the Christian world stands at nearly 90 per cent and 15 Christian-majority states have a literacy rate of 100 per cent. A Muslim-majority state, as a sharp contrast, has an average literacy rate of around 40 per cent and there is no Muslim-majority state with a literacy rate of 100 per cent. Some 98 per cent of the 'literates' in the Christian world had completed primary school, while less than 50 per cent of the 'literates' in the Muslim world did the same. Around 40 per cent of the 'literates' in the Christian world attended university while no more than two per cent of the 'literates' in the Muslim world did the same.

Muslim-majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims. The U.S. has 4,000 scientists per million and Japan has 5,000 per million. In the entire Arab world, the total number of full-time researchers is 35,000 and there are only 50 technicians per one million Arabs (in the Christian world there are up to 1,000 technicians per one million). Furthermore, the Muslim world spends 0.2 per cent of its GDP on research and development, while the Christian world spends around five per cent of its GDP.

Conclusion: The Muslim world lacks the capacity to produce knowledge.

Daily newspapers per 1,000 people and number of book titles per million are two indicators of whether knowledge is being diffused in a society. In Pakistan, there are 23 daily newspapers per 1,000 Pakistanis while the same ratio in Singapore is 360. In the UK, the number of book titles per million stands at 2,000 while the same in Egypt is 20.

Conclusion: The Muslim world is failing to diffuse knowledge.

Exports of high technology products as a percentage of total exports are an important indicator of knowledge application. Pakistan's exports of high technology products as a percentage of total exports stands at one per cent. The same for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait , Morocco , and Algeria (are all at 0.3 per cent) while Singapore is at 58 per cent.

Conclusion: The Muslim world is failing to apply knowledge.

Why are Muslims powerless?

Because we aren't producing knowledge.

Why are Muslims powerless?
Because we aren't diffusing knowledge.

Why are Muslims powerless?
Because we aren't applying knowledge.

And, the future belongs to knowledge-based societies.

Interestingly, the combined annual GDP of 57 OIC-countries is under $2 trillion. America, just by herself, produces goods and services worth $12 trillion; China - $8 trillion, Japan - $3.8 trillion and Germany - $2.4 trillion (purchasing power parity basis).

Oil rich Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar collectively produce goods and services (mostly oil) worth $500 billion; Spain alone produces goods and services worth over $1 trillion; Catholic Poland - $489 billion and Buddhist Thailand - $545 billion. Muslim GDP, as a percentage of worlds GDP, is fast declining.

So, why are Muslims so powerless?

Answer: Lack of education!

All we do is shouting to Allah the whole day and blame everyone else for our multiple failures.

While there is an faction of Americans right here in the states which has a burning hatred of "smarty-pants pointy-headed intellectuals" -- and California's once-great university system went down with Proposition 13 while their prison system is flourishing.

David Brin fears our society is reverting to the old aristocrats
/peons mode we thought we'd escaped. Maybe Dr. Saleem should remind us of what he's urging for his own.

I don't like judging individuals by group affiliation. Hard to tell also if this guy is referring to people as Jews based on genealogy or religious belief and/or affiliation. Benjamin Disraeli, after all, converted to Christianity -- or was that his father who did that? Social advancement of certain kinds is only open to Christians in many Western countries, and because people get stamped with the Jewish ethnic stigma, the only way to escape this labeling is to convert out.

Hence, many of the people who get labeled Jews are in fact atheists. They are not really Jews at all, except by descent. Which means that if you only counted believers, the Jewish track record would not be much better than the Moslem one. ;->

Part of the tragedy is that the Islamic world displayed real talent, only a few centuries ago. Algebra, trigonometry, navigation, astronomy, chemistry; major contributions while Europe was wallowing in the Dark Ages. We all owe them a huge debt just for positional numeration alone. (The mystical Hindus invented the zero, the pragmatic Arabs used it to balance their books; and zero is all they've agreed on since!)

As for education; there's a Yiddish folk-song in which the rabbi tearfully tells the kiddies to learn that aleph-beth, so that they may know their (lacrymose) history.

Literacy is, in a sense, 'real magic'; it is a "spell" of cultural immortality.

Something to keep in mind, this isn't about religion, though that's a conveinent way of drawing the lines. This is about culture.

"There are nine and sixty ways of constructing tribal lays,

but evidently, just because it's right, doesn't mean that it's best.
Middle-eastern cultures have always found it easier to take other nation's things than develop their own. they didn't have their own mathematics, they just stole it from the Greeks and the Hindi. they didn't develop their own oil infrastructure, they stole it from western developers.
Even Islam itself is a collection of stolen ideas. "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman."

we could continue to say that every culture is equal, that they all have their share of wrongs. or we could do like the author of this piece and look at the fruits of these cultures with an objective eye.

Aya Katz said...

Dorageen, I have to disagree with you there.

It is a Middle-Eastern culture that came up with the alphabet the Greeks copied. The Phoenician alphabet is what all the Europeans are using now, having copied it from the Romans who copied it from the Greeks. The names of the letters are Semitic, a dead give-away.

Leslie, gotta tell you, this kind of thing brings out the jingoist in everyone. I just don't think it's productive to ascribe the achievements of individuals to the cultures from which they emerged or the ethnic group that spawned them.

As for the value of education, America has about the worst educational system in the world, but the best per capita income. And up to recently, it was the most powerful nation, too. Productivity is ultimately more important than book learning.

One ought to be wary of making statements like this without data to back it up. I'm uncertain of the proportion of famous Jews listed in the post who are believers as well as Jewish by descent, but I would highly doubt that believing Jews are no more intellectually productive than believing Muslims (for one thing, the Jewish religion hugely emphasizes book learning, memorization, and lots of debate as part of their religion; Islam basically says 'this is the Word of God, perfect as it is, take it or leave it'.)

Aya Katz said...

Tom, I'm pretty sure that the scientists listed were not believers. For instance, regardless, of what is ascribed to Einstein, he did not believe. Most of these people had to overcome an oppressive Orthodox religion in order to emerge as thinkers. If they themselves did not have to do it, then it was their parent's or grandparent's generation that had to wrestle with this problem.

Let's also remember that Judaism, Christianity and Islam are really just branches of the same religion. They start with the same basic premises. They all expect people to memorize religious texts (and they all have the OT as part of the sacred repertoire.)

The reason diasporatic Jews tend to be more scholarly than others is that they had to leave their lower class people behind in the Middle East. (The Palestinians are the Judeans who didn't leave.)

You can't have a country in which everyone is a scholar. You need farmers and laborers, too. The reason diasporatic Jews could afford to specialize in educationally demanding professions is because they had no country of their own. They depended on the local peasantry.

Individuals are inevitably judged by their groups. 'The apple didn't fall far from the tree.' 'You are who your friends are.' Would you deny a parents influence on their children? Who were those parents influenced by? The influence stretches back through time passed down by this thing we call culture.

@Aya, I am and was raised Roman Catholic and I've never had to memorize any texts.

i was hoping my friend would comment, he has a good point and i hope i express it well.

Islam departed from western philosophy in the 11th century. before that, they basically agreed with the Greek philosophers and thus the west in general. Then Al Ghizali tore down the Greek philosophical methods of inquiry and almost singlehandedly turned Islam away from rational thinking and towards occasionalism.

Occasionalism holds that everything that happens in the natural world is direct result of the will of god, thus any attempt humans make to ascribe rules to it is folly (and possibly blasphemy). God tends to allow things to happen in a certain way, but he doesn't hold himself to any rules or laws. thus they reject the notion of natural law.

i don't think it can be overstated just how big of a difference this is. without the notions of permanent laws of nature, you can't have science.

However, in the 13th century Thomas Aquinas was arguing in favour of natural law via natural theology. Natural theology argues for proofs of any inquiry into the nature of God based on reason and observation of reality rather than direct divine revelation. This line of thought led to the modern scientific method.

I should also note that this is more true for sunni islam (and its spinnoff, Wahhabisim) than shiite islam.

I can think of two Jewish Orthodox Nobel prize winners: Shay Agnon and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Aumann. The equivalent would be 200 Muslims with Nobel prizes - still more than the observed value.

There is something in Jewish culture (which tends to be transmitted for a few generations past conversion / loss of observance), which is conducive to some behaviors and not so much towards others. A lot of those behaviors are useful. It comes from the memetic (and possibly genetic) selective breeding we've had. It was relatively easy and well rewarded to drop Judaism between the Bar Kochba rebellion and the enlightenment.

Aya Katz said...

Ori, Aumann is an anomaly. As for Agnon, he wasn't a scientist and as far as I know, he wasn't what we in Israel would consider "religious". He hung out with the literati in coffee houses and wrote modernist fiction. He was clean shaven and wore modern clothing. He was a Zionist. So I wouldn't count him in your list.

You're right, though, that there is a selective process among the Jews of the diaspora. Many people did convert out, if they had the traits that would make it easy for them to assimilate easily into the crowd of ordinary people. Those traits includes not being so hooked on books that you can't do other things.

As a result, those who stayed in the Jewish diaspora community tended to be eggheads and a little on the autistic side. I'm not knocking it. I'm just saying, there are two sides to the story.

Fascinating! Grrl, have you noticed that the faction of Americans who hate "smarty-pants pointy-headed intellectuals" tend to be the religious fanatics? There's a little more to it than just the tendency of science to disprove religious myths that their worshipers want to interpret literally; I think it also has to do with intellectual laziness, and the resentment of the lazy toward the hard-working and therefore successful.

The best cure for this is, silly as this sounds, to teach those intellectuals karate, if they won't take up gunfighting. No kidding. I once saw one of the junior high-school "grinds" flatten the captain of the football team, after which everybody treated her with considerable respect.

Yes, the rich and powerful in the US are trying to push America into the same old system of aristocrats and peons -- currently, under the excuse of "globalism". This isn't new; the old aristocrats, horrified at the overturning of the old Proper Order, began working to subvert the Revolution before the ink was dry on the Constitution. We've had to fight them off ever since, and the subverting of our educational system is just the latest battle in the old war.

Hi, Aya! (BTW, the book arrived, and I'll review it here later.) Remember that "Jews" are more often defined by their enemies than by themselves or their own personal beliefs. Remember how 1930s Germany defined a Jew as anybody who had so much as one Jewish grandparent. Or, as the old Yiddish joke goes: Q: "Grandpa, why should I be a Jew in the world today?" A: "Nu? You have a choice?"

--Leslie <;)))><

Aya Katz said...

Leslie, glad you got the book!

I remember well what happened in Germany. I don't want in happening here.

So far, America is the one country where you do have a choice! I'm exercising that choice! I'm pagan, and though an ex-Israeli and a Hebrew speaker, I'm not a Jew.

The Orthodox Jews who scorned critical thinking and Zionism are now legislating religion in Israel and deciding who everybody is based on ethnicity, which is why my family left. Hitler didn't just hurt the Jews of Europe who were happy there: he destroyed the one place on earth that was supposed to be a haven for people from the diaspora who didn't want to be forced to be Jews. Israel was supposed to be for Israelis. Thanks to the resurgence in "Jewish Consciousness" brought about by the Holocaust, it no longer is.

And they import people from the Philippines to do their blue collar work.

When education is not given to girls and women, how can they help their sons?

Jews place a lot of importance of learning and education, rather than mere acceptance of what you're told is the word of G*d.

Fundamentalist Christians place little importance on arguing the details, I seem to recall--they seem to favor rote memorization rather than critical thinking,

In the 40% literacy in the Arabic and other Moslem cultures, what proportion of women fit into that number?

In the US, there are natives and immigrants who know that education of the next generation is the key to escaping their own poverty, but some subcultures seem to see that as betraying that subculture.

I thank Athena and her owl for being able to learn and to seek more knowledge, info, and thought.
